This is just too cool not to post. The USS Lake Erie, an Aegis Cruiser, launched a missile at a defunct and falling satellite 153 miles above the Earth and traveling 17,000 mph. The satellite contained 1,000 pounds of toxic hydrazine fuel and was expected to reenter the atmosphere and crash in the first week of March.
The link has a Pentagon briefing and video of the missile launch and the impact.
Total cost of the mission was $30 million. My tax dollars well spent as far as I am concerned.
BTW, this is just the sort of thing that missile defense naysayers have been saying is impossible for twenty years.
Congratulations to our insanely talented men and women in uniform and the literal rocket scientists whose genius made this a reality.
