It has been awhile since we visited Luther’s table:

A scorpion thinks when his head lies hid under a leaf, that he cannot be seen; even so the hypocrites and false saints think, when they have hoisted up one or two good works, that all their sins therewith are covered and hid.

This captures it does it not? I notice how quickly my pride seizes upon some “good deed” (going to a new bible study, performing a public kindness, etc.). Let us never forget who we are and what we need.
