Chief Justice of the Supreme Court John Roberts gave an apt analogy a few years back about the proper role of judges. He said they should be umpires. “Umpires don’t make the rules, they apply them. Nobody every went to a ball game to see the umpire. I will remember that it is my job to call balls and strikes –- and not to pitch or bat.”
Well, the “umpires” on the California Supreme Court just ran out to the mound and beat the crap out of the pitcher in the middle of the game!
By overturning California State Law and finding the voter approved ban on gay marriage unconstitutional under the California Constitution, the four justices have rushed the mound and and started pummeling the California electorate (I am trying the follow the analogy). What a sad day for the rule of law, not to mention the sanctity of marriage.
